PREACHING BEYOND THE CHOIR: THE ART OF AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

Craft How can filmmakers trying to enact social change cut through the noise? And how do they broaden their appeal to find new audiences to connect with an urgent message?

Preaching Beyond The Choir examines three approaches to do just that; from campaigning for financial education where it’s needed most, to offering positive solutions to the climate crisis, and the experiences of society’s most marginalised.

Moderator Elissa McKeand invites Scott Pape (The Barefoot Investor) and Wendy Moore (LifeStyle group), Damon Gameau and Anna Kaplan (2040), and Jacob Hickey (Blackfella Films) to unpack the creative strategies and personal motivations underpinning their approach. The session then throws the discussion forward to consider the kinds of solutions suited to future projects.

This is a lively deep dive into the craft of social change through film and television, the metrics employed to evaluate the success of the campaigners at the heart of each project, and a view to what needs to be done differently to engage screen audiences of the future.
