AIDC 2023 Starts On Sunday

BE AN AGENT OF CHANGE

GET READY FOR AIDC 2023

Commencing Sunday 5 March, experience four days of inspiration, collaboration, insight, and celebration at AIDC 2023. We welcome you to explore this year’s theme Agents of Change across over 40 sessions, with over 120 speakers presenting, and 100-plus decision makers participating in the AIDC Marketplace.

Our theme, Agents of Change, looks to the changemakers inspiring new practices that elevate nonfiction storytelling, bringing courageous and daring stories to our attention and creating real world impact.

Join us as we delve into the topic through several sub-themes –  Upcoming, Breaking Ground, Shifting Perspectives, In Focus and Future Horizons – the 2023 program promising to stimulate discussion and inspire positive action for the future of our medium.

WHAT'S ON

This year’s program highlights include headliner sessions with Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Sara Dosa (Fire of Love), and Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Shaunak Sen (All That Breathes).

We’re also excited to welcome BAFTA award winner Daniel Roher (Navalny) and acclaimed filmmaker Emma Sullivan (Into the Deep) to share their insights on the challenges involved in creating investigative documentaries, as well as the opportunities and dangers present when a story takes an unexpected turn.

Other exciting highlights include Fatima Salaria, Managing Director of UK Production Company Naked Television, presenting a masterclass in series producing, with a focus on  capturing current trends to create captivating nonfiction television with a wide appeal to global audiences.

Closing out our conference is the annual AIDC Awards, a chance to celebrate Australian nonfiction productions from the last year across six categories. We will also be presenting the prestigious 2023 Stanley Hawes Award to Dr Cathy Henkel for her incredible contribution to the industry.

As always, AIDC’s ever-popular social events and parties return to offer all delegates a chance to connect and unwind after each day during the conference.

MARKETPLACE

In addition to the many insightful sessions that are on offer, AIDC’s premiere pitching event, The FACTory, proudly returns with a stellar line-up of pitching teams seeking to garner interest and secure deals from our experienced panel of global decision makers. Operating across three strands, Central Showcase, New Talent and Rough Cut, we have 14 incredible teams presenting their projects live to a variety of commissioners, sales agents, funders, and distributors.

Also on the pitching front, AIDC’s Cut to the Chase curated pitch meetings program has confirmed a bumper schedule of 620-plus meetings between producers and participating local and international decision makers, set to take place during AIDC 2023 and after, in our online international marketplace, 9-11 March.

Making its debut amid the bustle of the marketplace is Fresh Cuts, AIDC’s brand new pitching showcase, presented with Screen Australia. Presenting live are five teams seeking documentary development funding to create bold stories that speak to young adult audiences.

INITIATIVES

AIDC 2023 also sees the return of a number of popular development initiatives, including Leading Lights, set to introduce 36 emerging, culturally and linguistically diverse, and Indigenous documentary and factual practitioners to the AIDC industry community for the first time.

We’re also proud to host the fifth Indigenous Creators Program, a dedicated strand of sessions and marketplace activities designed by and for First Nations practitioners to come together, share ideas and elevate the craft and business of First Nations stories. This year, we welcome 76 First Nations and Indigenous storytellers, including members of the 2023 Hot Docs delegation from Canada.

For those interested in expanding the form of documentary storytelling into the realms of the interactive and immersive, DOC.LAB.INTERACT also returns for its second year, with five projects set to participate in a workshop hosted by Amy Rose of cutting edge UK studio Anagram.
