Discover the art of the long-form investigation, as journalist and filmmaker Marc Fennell (Stuff the British Stole) delves into two recent award-winning long-form audio documentaries – You Have Been Told A Lie and Nobody Dies Here: Inside Melbourne’s Medically Supervised Injecting Room. These practitioners are embracing all the possibilities of podcasts to tell impactful stories that provide listeners with the opportunity to access first-hand witness accounts of unique lived experiences.

In this session we are joined by Michelle Ransom-Hughes – the producer/writer and host of Nobody Dies Here which won Best Documentary at the 2023 Australian Podcast Awards. This bold audio doc takes us inside the heart of Richmond’s contentious medically supervised injecting facility, avoiding the usual political debate and discourse by focusing on the people who know it best – health workers and people who inject drugs.

We are also joined by Jay Ooi (writer, producer, editor) and Thinesh Thillainadarajah (creator, producer) of You Have Been Told A Lie – Blood, Borders, and Biloela. Together with the Nadesalingam family, this six-part award winning podcast series finally told the true and remarkable story of a family thrust into the national spotlight in a game of political football.

Together, these audio doc creators will dissect the art of meticulous research and how they strike the balance between journalistic rigour and creative storytelling to shape impactful long-form audio investigations.
