EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI) FORM

TERMS OF REFERENCE

1. Role/Purpose

The Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to supporting and elevating nonfiction storytelling through creative and business opportunities across film, television, streaming, and digital media.

AIDC organises a marketplace for documentary and factual productions, provides a space for networking to encourage collaboration between practitioners and showcases the work of Australian and international producers.

Over the next two years, several Board Director positions will become available and the current AIDC Board and Exec team is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs). 

This is an opportunity to play an integral role as part of an exciting not-for-profit organisation during a period of growth and expansion in its core activities.

Membership to the AIDC Board of Directors is a voluntary/unpaid position. 

We are seeking committed board members who are willing to: 

  • Attend virtual board meetings approximately every six weeks  
  • Attend and actively participate in the annual four-day conference in March 
  • Participate in one or more sub-committees aligned with your field of expertise and/or area of interest

2. Term

Board terms are for three (3) years from commencement and directors serve for no more than two consecutive terms.

3. Composition of the Board of Directors

The AIDC Board of Directors is made up of no less than seven Directors and no more than 11. There are currently eight directors with several current Director’s terms, including two office bearers, expiring in the next two years.

AIDC is committed to ensuring that diversity, inclusion and equity are embedded throughout our organisation and especially on our Board of Directors. We believe our people are our greatest asset and by supporting and incorporating their diverse talents, knowledge, perspectives and experiences, we can strengthen as an organisation.

COVID-19 has changed the way both the screen and event sectors are run. 

In light of this, the current Board of Directors recognises the need for additional areas of expertise in order for the organisation to adapt and sustain its growth trajectory.

To address this the Board is seeking expressions of interest from the sector for directors with two or more of the following skill sets:  

  • Knowledge of Governance and Compliance, in not-for-profits preferred 
  • Sound understanding of the screen industry 
  • Extensive contacts within the Australian screen and peripheral industries 
  • Extensive contacts within the international screen and aligned industries 
  • High level of financial literacy – CPA / B.Com or similar 
  • First Nations documentary and factual storytelling practice and protocols (specific to interested First Nations applicants only)
  • Working knowledge of events, conference  or festival industry  
  • Knowledge of or interest in emerging technologies and innovative storytelling 
  • Knowledge of and connections with podcast / audio storytelling sector  

We are interested in hearing from people from the following sectors: 

  • Media
  • Publishing 
  • Events 
  • Public broadcasters / Streamers
  • Australian Screen Agencies  
  • Legal
  • Finance and Accounting

AIDC encourages applications from First Nations Australians and people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. We are also seeking applicants who are from regional, remote or non-metropolitan Australia especially Western Australia, Far North Queensland & Northern Territory.

4. Roles & Responsibilities

The AIDC Board of Directors works with the AIDC Executive Team to:

  • oversee the governance framework to ensure the organisation meets its obligations
  • set the strategic direction of the organisation
  • oversee financial performance of the organisation
  • oversee the risk management strategy 
  • leverage professional networks for fundraising and other forms of in-kind support  
  • play an active role in building a culture of integrity by modelling the behaviours based on the public sector values and standards
  • oversee the performance and remuneration of the organisation’s CEO/Creative Director
  • operate within its statutory powers and policies
  • oversee the occupational health and safety of the organisation
  • manage stakeholders

5. EOI application process
