SHORT CUTS: PATHWAYS TO GETTING YOUR SHORT DOCS MADE (AND SEEN)

Innovation Discover firsthand insights into the craft and business of short documentaries. Join commissioners and award-winning filmmakers in conversation with Anu Hasbold (MOFA).

The short documentary is an art unto itself. Often considered a stepping stone to feature docs, it can also be a powerful form to push creative boundaries and test new ground, unbound by the constraints of long-form projects which often rely on multiple funders that can impact creative and editorial direction. Outside of traditional pathways, unexpected avenues to audience exist for short documentaries, including online platforms, exhibition spaces, broadcasters, journalistic outlets, festivals and beyond.

In this session, helmed by Anu Hasbold (development producer, MOFA), filmmakers like Ursula Grace Williams (Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds, Young and…A Siren King) join shorts commissioners for a deep dive into how to get your short funded and made, and also how to get it seen – offering new methods for connecting with audiences across the globe.
