AIDC ANNOUNCES INNOVATION DAY LINE-UP

Exploring and nurturing new modes of factual narrative and data visualisation

Proudly supported by City of Melbourne, AIDC’s continued support of boundary-expanding invention and experimentation in factual storytelling will manifest as INNOVATION DAY on Sunday 1 March during AIDC 2020.

Exploring and nurturing new modes of factual narrative and data visualisation, the AIDC 2020 Innovation Day will feature internationally-renowned speakers from the cutting edge of digital experiential storytelling alongside custom-designed pitching programs for VR/AR/interactive and data journalism works.

MARSHMALLOW LASER FEAST

Firstly, AIDC is thrilled to announce an appearance by Robin McNicholas of award-winning London-based creative studio Marshmallow Laser Feast (Treehugger, Tribeca 2017 Sweet Dreams, Sundance 2019)

Creating unique experiences that immerse and amaze in unexpected ways, MLF has employed a wealth of creative disciplines – from photo-real virtual reality to robotic performance and realtime mapping – to push boundaries, redefine expectations and excite audiences.

NFB DIGITAL STUDIO

Next, we welcome speaker and decision maker Rob McLaughlin, Head of the National Film Board of Canada’s digital studio where he leads in the development of the institution’s digital-first programming and strategy, including interactive and immersive projects

Rob has produced many of the NFB’s pioneering digital projects since establishing the studio, including Welcome to Pine Point, Bear 71 and most recently the VR projects Biidaaban: First Light, Homestay and Gymnasia.

MEET YOUR MAKER XR PITCH

Both Rob and Robin will be among feedback panelists for the Meet Your Maker XR Pitch, AIDC’s purpose-made pitching forum for factual XR (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality) projects.

During Meet Your Maker, four selected project teams will pitch publicly to a panel of decision makers from across the industry, obtaining feedback on how to take projects to the next level and potentially sealing deals in financing, distribution and exhibition.

Each selected project team will also receive exclusive one-on-one mentoring sessions with Rob McLaughlin and Robin McNicholas.

Project submissions for the Meet Your Maker XR Pitch are now open, with more information and application details here. Submissions close Monday 13 January 2020.

RAW DATA, REAL STORIES PITCH

Other Innovation Day highlights include the return of Google News Initiative’s Raw Data, Real Stories pitch, with journalists and storytellers from all backgrounds invited to submit ideas for a data-driven story.

Up to $60,000 in development and commissioning funds are available to projects selected for the pitch. Submissions are open now and will close Monday 16 December 2019.

LAM THUY VO MASTERCLASS

Capping the day will be a special Masters series masterclass with Buzzfeed senior data reporter Lam Thuy Vo, moderated by Kylie Boltin, whose own interactive project Missing is currently exhibiting as part of IDFA’s DocLab program.

Lam Thuy Vo’s participation is generously supported by Google News Initiative.
