Māori and Pacific commissioner Summer Wharekawa (Ngāti Tahu, Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Maniapoto) joined TVNZ's Local Content team in 2019 as Commissioner for Māori & Pasifika content

Summer is also managing TVNZ and NZ On Air’s children’s platform HEIHEI. Summer brings more than 15 years of NZ TV experience to the role, she was formerly Senior Commissioner and Interim Head of Content Development at Māori Television. Prior to that Summer worked as producer, director, production manager and researcher for several independent production companies – including her own across factual, entertainment and children’s content.
