In 2018 his interactive VR work, The Unknown Patient, was nominated for two awards at the 75th Venice Film Festival, and won the VR Award at the Adelaide Film Festival. Michael was also nominated for a 2019 ADG award for best direction in an immersive experience. Michael is considered a pioneer of live film experiences with his films In the Shadow it Waits, a film performed, shot, and edited live recently premiered at Raindance Film Festival, and Those Left Waiting, a live documentary film created by refugees in camps around the world and edited and composed in real-time at CPH:DOX.
