John Harvey is the Creative Director of BROWN CABS. He is a producer, director and writer working in both narrative and factual.

In narrative he produced feature film SPEAR directed by Stephen Page premiering at 2015 TIFF & Adelaide Film Festival.  He produced the chapter SAND for Robert Connolly’s bold omnibus feature film THE TURNING (MIFF, Berlinale)  based on Tim Winton’s book of short stories.  He was a producer on the ABC TV series THE WARRIORS (Arenamedia).   John has produced 7 Indigenous short films that have screened in various international film festivals and broadcast on national television.   His writing and directing debut short film WATER screened at MIFF, Adelaide Film Festival and ImagineNATIVE Film and Arts Festival (Toronto).

In factual, John has directed two half hour documentaries for ABC television – LIGHT FROM THE SHADOWS and MENNY AND THE BUNDAROOS.  He has directed and produced several short form documentaries for NITV.    He is producing WARBURDAR BUNUNU – WATER SHIELD as part of Screen Australia’s State of Alarm Initiative.   He is directing and co-producing web series KUTCH’S CARPOOL KOORIOKE, currently in post production.

Prior to film John worked in theatre producing numerous new Indigenous works for Melbourne’s Ilbijerri Theatre.   John continues to work in theatre as a producer, writer and director.  John wrote and produced the sold out premiere season of HEART IS A WASTELAND presented at Malthouse Theatre in 2017.  He produced the highly acclaimed MY LOVERS BONES for 2014 Melbourne Festival.   He directed A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN for Orana Arts.

John is passionate about working with ambitious and risk taking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers through his production company BROWN CABS.
