Jury Revealed for 2024 AIDC Awards

Featuring local and global creators, producers, and decision makers from BBC Studios, New York Times Op-Docs, ACMI and more

AIDC is very proud to reveal the jurors for the 4th annual AIDC Awards, featuring 18 renowned local and global creators, producers, and executives from across the documentary and factual industry.  

The AIDC Awards will be presented on Wednesday 6 March at ACMI, Melbourne / Naarm during AIDC 2024, and acknowledge outstanding Australian documentary and factual works from the last year across six categories: Best Feature Documentary, Best Documentary/Factual Series; Best Documentary/Factual Single; Best Short-Form Documentary, Best Audio Documentary, and Best Interactive/Immersive Documentary.

Winners across selected categories will also receive prizes presented by AIDC partners, including the $5,000 Best Feature Documentary Prize, presented by Film Finances; $3,000 Best Audio Documentary Prize, presented by AFTRS; and $3,000 Best Interactive / Immersive Documentary Prize, presented by Deakin Motion Lab.

The 2024 AIDC Awards jurors were appointed for their extensive knowledge and industry experience in their respective categories.

BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

  • Erin Casper – Editor (Fire of Love, Risk, Becoming) (USA)
  • Sasha Close – President, Natalie Miller Fellowship (NMF) (AUS)
  • Dudi Rokach – Founder and Festival Director, Antenna Documentary Film Festival (AUS)

BEST DOCUMENTARY / FACTUAL SERIES

  • Madeleine Hetherton-Miau – Co-founder/Director/Producer, Media Stockade (AUS)
  • Michael McMahon – Executive Producer, Big and Little Films (AUS)
  • Deb Spinocchia – Head of Unscripted, BBC Studios ANZ (AUS)

BEST DOCUMENTARY / FACTUAL SINGLE

  • Dean Gibson – Company Director, Bacon Factory Films (AUS)
  • Blayke Hoffman – Producer, Stranger Than Fiction Films (AUS)
  • Yukari Misaizu – Senior Producer, International Programs Department, NHK Enterprises (JPN)

BEST SHORT-FORM DOCUMENTARY

  • Mia Falstein-Rush – Program Manager, Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) (AUS)
  • John Harvey – Creative Director, Brown Cabs (AUS)
  • Christine Kecher – Senior Commissioning Editor, New York Times Op-Docs (USA)

BEST AUDIO DOCUMENTARY

BEST INTERACTIVE / IMMERSIVE DOCUMENTARY

  • Seb Chan – CEO / Director, ACMI (AUS)
  • Tom Millen – Director, Crossover Labs (UK)
  • Julia Scott-Stevenson – Researcher, producer, curator – immersive & interactive nonfiction media, University of Technology Sydney (AUS)

Since launching the AIDC Awards in 2021, the number of and quality of submissions have continued to increase, reinforcing the importance of a dedicated Awards program that celebrates and recognises excellence in Australian doc and factual programs,” said AIDC CEO / Creative Director Natasha Gadd.

“Creators continue to set the bar high, and in 2024, AIDC has lined up a stellar panel of jurors who bring a wealth of experience and expertise across all categories to honour the contributions of  the doc and factual productions from the last year. 

“We thank the jury for their contribution to continuing to elevate the AIDC Awards and ensure the very best projects are recognised and lauded for the quality of craft and storytelling across shorts, features, series and singles, audio and interactive.”

The nominees for the 2024 AIDC Awards will be revealed on 15 February 2024.

On the same date, we also announce the winner of the inaugural AIDC Southern Light Award – a $5,000 prize presented by AIDC to an Australian industry professional for their outstanding contribution to nonfiction screen, digital and/or audio media.  

The AIDC Southern Light Award  will be presented during the AIDC Awards presentation at ACMI on Wednesday 6 March 2024.
