Playback: Crafting Music Docs and Pathways To Licensing

Craft A panel of esteemed local music doc makers reveal insights into bringing legends to life and navigating complex licensing deals to create some of the most iconic recent music documentaries.

Over the last decade, we have seen an undeniable surge of music documentaries that both audiences and buyers are clearly hungry for. So what’s the secret to nailing a bygone era, artist or moment in music history? In this session, a panel of local music doc makers demystify the practicalities involved in licensing footage, music and how these beloved documentaries may take shape in the future.

This session will interrogate the different types of music documentaries – archival, concert and observational – and discuss the intricacies of making a music documentary. Producer Cody Greenwood (Under the Volcano) is joined by producer and director Philippa Bateman (Wash My Soul in the Rivers Flow); producer Carolina Sorensen (I’m Wanita) and director Jonathan Alley (Love in Bright Landscapes) to discuss the enduring appeal of music docs and their experience in development, production, the edit and beyond.
