In 2019, he was inducted into the Order of Merit, with Queen’s honours for services to Pacific arts and the LGBTQIA+ community. Gago is a founding member of the Auckland vogue scene, as well as the co-founder and creative director of Queer Indigenous Arts Collective FAFSWAG.
